The South Coast of KwaZulu Natal, also known as the Hibiscus Coast, is a "beach holiday Mecca." The warm ocean, lush green vegetation and seemingly endless golden beaches form a picture perfect hideaway. Many of the little towns that have been found along this section of the coast have more traditional Colonial names, while being equally quaint and charming that is where any similarity ends. Here you are as likely to see someone strolling along the golden beaches in winter licking an ice-cream cone as you are in summer.
All year round dolphins can be spotted trawling up and down the coastline as well as the occasional cruising whale. The annual "Sardine Run" is a highlight to an already exciting coastline. Expected around June or July each year the massive shoal of sardines entices thousands of dolphins, sharks, game fish and a few whales into a feeding frenzy that simply has to be seen.
Many of the properties along this part of the coast are in the "Olde World" style at times leading you to believe that you really are in a tiny colonial village. This is just one of the many charms and benefits of investing in South Coast property. |
| A narrow gauge steam train runs between Port Shepstone and Paddock and back (39 km), departing at 10:00 on Wednesdays and Saturdays. The train climbs and winds inland through lush green sugar cane fields and banana plantations, twisting and sometimes almost doubling back on itself as it negotiates the hills and valleys. There's a shorter excursion to Izotsha every Thursday and Sunday, and every day during the Gauteng school holidays. Booking essential. |

Oribi Gorge Nature Reserve |
| The Oribi Gorge Nature Reserve is a wonderfully scenic area offering excellent hiking opportunities. The area boasts cliffs and forests and spectacular hiking trails and picnic sites. Wildlife in the Oribi Gorge consists of many antelope, although the oribi (after which the gorge is named) is rarely seen. A photographer's paradise, this little Eden encompasses forests, rivers, rapids and ravine. High sandstone cliffs dominate this 24km long gorge carved out by the Umzimkulwana River. Leopards, troops of baboons, various small antelope and a prolific bird life, including five species of kingfisher and seven species of eagle inhabit the reserve. There are several nature trails for the adventurous. |

South Coast Blue Flag Beaches |
Blue Flag certification started as an environmental and tourism campaign in Europe to assure visitors that certified beaches are clean, safe and environmentally sound. Blue Flag status is only awarded to those beaches that achieve excellence in water quality, environmental education and information, and adhere to international safety standards. High levels of cleanliness, the quality of facilities (toilets and showers) and professional lifeguard services are key criterion of Blue Flag beaches. The Blue Flag assures the visitor, that the beaches are clean and environmentally friendly. The award also helps to educate the community about the need and means of caring for our coastline; to promote one of South Africa’s natural treasures.
