The northern suburbs of Johannesburg include the wealthier and developed parts of the city. These suburbs include both large housing developments and commercial centres. The northern suburbs have benefited greatly from the deterioration of the CBD as many people and businesses moved. The northern suburbs have developed along the M1 and N1 highways, which serve as their major arterial roads.
The residential areas in the northern suburbs are mainly formal with no significant areas of informal housing. Although this is an established area, there is a trend of land use change from residential to commercial, especially along main arterial roads and around established nodes. Roads to the east and west are less well developed, as there are no freeways travelling in that direction.
The density of building decreases towards the northern border of the city leaving large areas of undeveloped land around Midrand. Grand Central Airport is located in this area near Midrand making it more accessible to the rest of South Africa. Rosebank is the centre of high-end retail and shopping for northern suburb residents with most retail development centred on The Zone @ Rosebank which is one of the most prestigious shopping centres in Gauteng. |
Grand Central Airport is a small privately-owned airfield which is open to public air traffic. Located in Midrand this airfield was opened in 1937 by a group of motor racing enthusiasts who were also interested in flying. Grand Central Airport is a fully-equipped airfield open 24 hours a day. Restricted to light aircraft prior permission to land is not required, a radio call is sufficient.

| Situated just south of Sandton, in Illovo, the Wanderers Stadium plays host to both international and provincial cricket matches. The Wanderers Stadium regarded as one of the best grounds in international cricket played host to the 2003 Cricket World Cup Final (Australia beating Pakistan). The Wanderers was also the venue for That Match where South Africa successfully chased 434 to win. |
